Forest and resource profile

Prince Albert Model Forest is located 75 kilometres north of the city of Prince Albert along the North Saskatchewan River in central Canada. It spans the mid-boreal upland ecoregion of the boreal forest. Its area is comprised of about half of Prince Albert National Park, including the town of Waskesiu, the Resort Village of Candle Lake, the Weyerhaeuser Forest Management Agreement area, the reserve lands and community of Montreal Lake Cree Nation, the reserve lands of Lac La Ronge Indian Band and part of the provincial Crown land base.

Economic profile

The economy is driven by resource-based industries of forestry, agriculture, and mining. Tourism plays a key role in the economy.

Why a model forest?

The Model Forest approach allowed us to tackle complex land use management issues among a diversity of interest groups including indigenous (First Nations and Metis) governments and communities, all levels of government, tourism and research interests, academia and industry.

Partners
  • Government - 35%
  • Indigenous peoples (First Nations) - 30%
  • Industry - 15%
  • Non-profit partnerships - 10%
  • Academia - 5%
  • Resort Village - 5%
Strategic goals
  • To increase the development and adoption of sustainable forest management systems (SFM) and tools, including best practices development, among the partners
  • To increase public awareness and knowledge transfer of the results and information gained through the practice of SFM, with some emphasis on the connection with youth through the PAMF web
  • To extend the PAMF program beyond its boundaries through both local and extended mentored partnerships, with a particular emphasis on social policy linkages and capacity building in targeted northern communities
  • To create long-term opportunities (beyond 2007) for partners, local level participants and northern communities in the continued development and application of SFM systems and tools to improve the social, economic and environmental benefits accrued (our long-term strategic plan)
  • To strengthen model forest network activities in support of Canada's SFM priorities
Accomplishments to date
  • An Integrated Resource Management Plan was developed and implemented together with all of our partners.
  • A number of research projects have been completed in the Model Forest and full reports are available at: www.pamodelforest.sk.ca
