Forest and resource profile Manitoba Model Forest researches, designs and implements distinct working-scale projects that strive to develop sustainable forest management practices in the Boreal Forest. Since 1993, the Manitoba Model Forest has successfully completed over 400 short and long term research, development, education and communication projects. These projects span a diverse range of subjects from charting woodland caribou migration patterns using Global Positioning System technology; to enhancing forest resource inventories and building lasting partnerships between diverse forest stakeholders. Currently, science efforts are focused on developing local level indicators (LLI) of sustainable forest management and mimicking natural disturbances by altering logging techniques and patterns. The Manitoba Model Forest has provided environmental resources management services in areas such as:
Economic profile This boreal forest region is a popular recreational area with over a century of timber harvesting history. For the last seventy years, the area has been the principal supply area for a major newsprint mill. In addition, mining, commercial and sport fishing, and tourism are a part of this vibrant boreal forest community. Why a model forest? Key management challenges/issues revolve around the need for multi-stakeholder planning. The region has diverse stakeholder requirements including but not limited to fiber supply for newsprint and other wood product industries; habitat for threatened wildlife species; recreation; and traditional aboriginal land use. The model forest approach was adopted as the most effective method to develop innovative solutions to landscape management challenges that were sustainable and inclusive of forest stakeholders at all levels. The Manitoba Model Forest has one of the largest Board of Directors representing Aboriginal communities, local government districts, Non-governmental organizations such as environmental groups and trappers; forest industry and economic development agencies.
